Canvas Prints

What is Canvas Printing?

A canvas print, also known as a stretched canvas or canvas art, is the result of an image printed onto canvas which is stretched, or gallery-wrapped, onto a frame and then displayed.

Canvas printing is the process of reproducing original art or photography on a thick, heavy woven fabric known as canvas. Similar to an artist painting on canvas with oil paint, it is also possible to print directly onto canvas by using specialized ink and a printer. With the right printing choice and finish,  a canvas print can look just like a fine art piece.

Along with the new, more advanced canvas printing technology, there have also been new developments in the way in which the canvas prints are presented. It is not only possible to have a recreated canvas art piece, but also to display it in a variety of shapes different from the standard, rectangular portrait or landscape.  After the image is printed, the canvas is trimmed to size and glued or stapled to traditional stretcher bars or a wooden panel and displayed in a frame or as a gallery wrap. A print that is designed to continue round the edges of a stretcher frame once gallery-wrapped is referred to as full-bleed. This can be used to enhance the three-dimensional effect of the mounted print.

Various Canvas Printing Methods

There are several different canvas printing methods used today. These methods allow anyone the freedom to choose the style that is best suited for their price range and requirements.

Giclee:  Giclee is the method used to reproduce digital images with the use of an inkjet printer and special inks. This method is regarded as the most well-known way of printing to canvas.

Offset Printing: This might be the most popular printing method used today for many different printing jobs. The method requires “inked image transfers” that begin from an image plate which is then transferred to a rubber surface, and ultimately onto a canvas. Offset printing has been the principal method used for newspaper printing for over a century.

Repligraph: This specific printing technology is quite different from the previous methods, since it requires a dye printing process using polymer films that are then fused onto a canvas to create art replicas. The Repligraph method is typically used to replicate oil paintings, because the end result is so similar to the original piece that many experts would take a while to notice it’s a fake.

There are several factors to consider when deciding to create a canvas print. The main factors being time allocated, price, quality and desired look.
